I thought I would take a break from my regular feature length blogs to promote a concert I hope to check out this weekend.
This Saturday, three-time accordion world champion player Cory Pesaturo will perform at Birmingham Southern College in Birmingham, Alabama. The event is sponsored by the Alabama Accordion Association, whose goal is to educate the public about the accordion. Two shows will take place at 1 P.M. and 6:30 P.M. and best of all, both are free to the public.
Cory Pesaturo is currently the only accordion player worldwide to win championships in all three accordion categories, which are jazz, digital and acoustic. He is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and holds the record for youngest person to perform at a State Dinner in The White House. Pesaturo also had the opportunity to give a talk at Google headquarters in California about the accordion and putting a positive spin on an instrument that is not all that common in the United States.
I wrote an article about the Alabama Accordion Association, which will run later this year, where I learned about the concert. A member at my church, who will also be performing this Saturday, mentioned that last year's concert was so fantastic that several people stayed for both shows and how rare an opportunity the chance is for the public to see a world champion musician perform for free.
