My First Week at my New Shift

· New Position,Running,Dental Lab

Several weeks ago, I posted an overview of my job and the challenges associated with the position. Unfortunately, I started having difficulties keeping up with the demands of being a wrapper. I did not want to quit but I also realized I could no longer give the company 100% of my effort.

Because my supervisor saw I was determined to make my time at the company work and my great work ethic, I was offered a new shift in the morning and early afternoon. I took the position and started this week. Although it will take some time to get used to, I really like the new shift I have at the dental lab.

I had the opportunity to learn how to inventory doctor’s cases that came in rather than going out. In addition, I learned how to unpack cases in order that that the patient’s information on the RX is in the right colored pan to be sent to the right department. While doing all that, I was also running work that was already logged into the company’s computer system to the different floors and taking completed work from the lab to be billed out, packaged and shipped by the afternoon crew.

All these tasks were performed in order to see where I might be of best use in my new shift. Eventually, my supervisor thought I would do my best running work between the different departments. This way, instead of having to concentrate on many different things, I could concentrate on one task. As with many who have Aspergers, multi-tasking is not my strongest point.

What I like about running work is that I get to spend long stretches of time in a quiet environment. This is because I am not in one spot for very long. On top of that, the morning shift is not as sensory stimulating as the afternoon shift.

Another benefit of running work is that I am constantly on my feet and moving around. This allows me to get exercise for the day as I am on the go around almost non-stop for several hours. I have received such a workout that I am not sure I am going to need to continue paying a membership fee to use the gym I have been using. Not only would this give me more money to do other things, but my time could be spent learning how to write and pitch story ideas to other publications. Thanks to working out at the gym for over a year and a change in lifestyle, I am now physically able to keep up with the demands of the new position.

As far as getting up in the morning, thanks to the time of year where the sun rises earlier each day, I woke up most days by 7 even before the change to the new shift. To be honest, I prefer waking up early and going to bed early. I feel like I get more accomplished if I wake up early vs. sleeping in until noon.

Wish me luck on my new shift.
